For schools, private or public corporations and community partners. A coach will be provided, or can be identified internally, to help you build a local Altruistic Sustainabilty Network.
Sustainability Coach Job Description
Coaches support SAPBL implementation by working directly with teachers while they progress through the online course and plan and implement student projects for sustainability.
The coach participates in all phases of the SAPBL process, including:
Assisting teachers to complete the online training, including:
Identifying and refining altruistic sustainability projects and related activities
Organizing resources for those projects including community sponsors, community spaces and funding opportunities.
Providing guidance during school-community implementation
Supporting the altruistic (SEL) assessment of learners
Coaches also build each school's altruistic sustainability network (ASN) by liaising between participating teachers and partner organizations outside of the school who have pledged to support student projects.
Coaches take the lead to help identify these partner organzations within the community interested in sponsoring the implementation of sustainability and altrusim in the classroom.
Supporting Teacher Action Research
The sustainability coach will also act as a liaison between teachers and researchers, assisting with data collection and encouraging teachers to consider their practice as a form of inquiry, or teacher action research, so that lessons learned, evidence-based practices, and teacher toolkits to share resources are documented and published.
Teachers and schools are encouraged to work with a coach who will provide each teacher with guidance, encouragement, and accompaniment through the process of implementing education for sustainability and altruism.
Coach Qualifications
Coaches must have at least one of the following qualifications:
A degree in a sustainability-related topic (e.g. environmental science, public health).
Work experience in a sustainability-related position in the public or private sector.
A teaching credential with experience implementing projects for sustainability with students.
Compensation
TeachESD.org is a being incubated by the Lisa & John McNichol Early Childhood Education (ECE) Lab, Drexel University, Philadelphia, USA. As a non-profit research and education endeavor in early stage development it can currently only provide a small stipend to coaches as a 'thank you' for their tremendous voluntary efforts. Coaches are also recognized as members of the ECE lab and receive benefits of membership such as access to its professional network, use of its physical office space and computers, and mentorship and professional growth opportunities.
